Pulse height measurements and electron attachment in drift chambers operated with Xe,CO2 mixtures

چکیده
We present pulse height measurements in drift chambers operated with Xe,CO2 gas mixtures. We investigate the attachment of primary electrons on oxygen and SF6 contaminants in the detection gas. The measurements are compared with simulations of properties of drifting electrons. We present two methods to check the gas quality: gas chromatography and Fe pulse height measurements using monitor detectors.

متن کاملElectron attachment , effective ionization coefficient , and electron drift velocity for CF 4 gas mixtures
For tracking in a SSC experiment with wire chambers, CF 4 gas mixtures are very advantageous from the point of view of aging, drift velocity, and spatial resolution. However, they are also known to suffer from considerable electron attachment. This attachment can cause serious inefficiencies in the collection of electrons liberated near the anode wire, and causes broadening of the pulse-height ...
متن کاملDrift velocity and gain in argon- and xenon-based mixtures
We present measurements of drift velocities and gains in gas mixtures based on Ar and Xe, with CO2, CH4, and N2 as quenchers, and compare them with calculations. In particular, we show the dependence of Arand Xe-CO2 drift velocities and gains on the amount of nitrogen contamination in the gas, which in real experiments may build up through leaks. A quantification of the Penning mechanism which ...
متن کاملStudies of Helium Gas Mixtures in Drift Chambers*
Some properties of gas mixtures, composed predominately of helium and lesser amounts of CO2 and isobutane, were measured in a prototype drift chamber. The studies are motivated by the desire to reduce the multiple scattering inside the drift chamber at future high-luminosity, low-energy facilities such as 4 factories, T/charm factories, and B factories. The low atomic number of helium greatly r...
